Goulburn Valley

Goulburn Valley is located in Central Victoria, which is in the south-east corner of Australia, Melbourne is the capital of Victoria. The first vines were planted in the Goulburn Valley region in 1860 after its potential as a wine region was first identified by a government land survey undertaken in 1850’s. The survey revealed the region possesses an abundance of water, has an ideal climate and sits on alluvial loam soils over a base of clay.

Trifon Estate

Trifon Estate is located at Wahring in the Goulburn Valley, Central Victoria. Featuring 6km’s of Goulburn River frontage as well as once an ancient riverbed and flood plain, the estate has an abundance of rich resources and a diverse microclimate which enables us to deliver an exceptional range of premium red and white wines.

Goulburn Valley

All civilizations depend on available water and of course rivers are a fine source of water. Rivers also provide societies with access to trade and once paddle steamers graced the Goulburn River but the building of the Goulburn Weir between 1887 and 1990 dropped the water level of the river which brought a stop to paddle steamers.

That said the Goulburn River still flows strong today delivering fresh clean water and fertile rich silt deposits originating in the Victorian Alps, then meandering its way to Echuca where it joins the Murray River making it the longest river in Victoria at 654 kilometres long.

History of Australian Wine

Australia’s wine industry has grown from a few small plantings at Sydney Cove to a country known as one of the top wine producing countries in the world in just over 200 years.

The first vines arrived in Australia with the First Fleet in 1788, although the majority of classic grape varieties were introduced from Europe to Australia in the 1830’s.

The Australian wine industry was established by early European settlers who used their knowledge and winemaking skills to establish commercial viticulture in most states by 1850.

Australia is one of the few countries in the world to produce all the major wine styles and there are now over 100 different varieties of vines planted in Australia most of which are:

  • Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Pinot Grigio, Traminer and Marsanne.
  • Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot, Durif, Sangiovese and Tempranillo.

Today Australia is the fifth largest exporter of Wine in the World and has rapidly become a world leader in innovation, quality, quantity and the diversity of wine varietals it produces.

Australia exports to many international markets including “old world” wine producing countries such as France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, ‘new world’ such as United States, Canada, South Africa, Chile and New Zealand or ‘newer world’ such as China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and more.

Terrior

The first Goulburn Valley vines were planted in 1860 and the region has continuously produced premium wines ever since. The first vines were planted at Trifon Estate in 1999 which are all premium European clones grafted on phylloxera resistant rootstock, approximately 800,000 vines.

Trifon Estate sits on top of an ancient riverbed and flood plain where the predominant soil type is alluvial loam sitting atop a clay sub soil. In higher parts of the vineyard there are small peaks dense in limestone which also enhances our premium award-winning quality wines.

There is an abundance of clean underground spring water and Goulburn River water therefore the vineyard is drought proof and due to the number of inland waterways, it provides a cooling influence on the local environment which reduces diurnal temperature variation.

Trifon Estate enjoys a mild, Mediterranean type climate (123m AMSL) with cool, wet winters and warm dry summers. The warmest mean temperatures occur in January (max 29.6°c) and the coolest in July (min 3.2°c) Average annual rainfall is 463mm and average rainfall days are 81.6. With an abundance of clean, unpolluted ground and river water, the vineyard is drought proof.
